Self Assessment

You must know yourself in order to sell yourself. There are many helpful career assessments available to assist you with identifying your personality traits and strengths. These are available at the MU Student Success Center.

It's important to analyze your likes and dislikes, so be honest with yourself. Be sure to take stock of the following:

  • Education - major, minor, coursework you excelled in, study abroad
  • Work Experience - part-time or summer jobs
  • Volunteer Work - campus or charitable organizations
  • Extra-Curricular Experiences - clubs organizations to which you belong
  • Hobbies - travel, writing, exercise
  • Awards - academic awards, dean's list, scholarships
  • Life goals - Is wealth important to you? Do you hope to have a family someday?

Do you notice any patterns in your assessment? Are you a natural leader? When a group disagrees, do you help them compromise and get back on track? Are you competitive, ambitious, goal-oriented?

It's important to identify these traits as you choose a career.  Most people spend 30+ years in the workplace.  Invest your time wisely.
